The Elimination Of Commercial Areas: Introduction Neighborhoods need strong commercial establishments to strengthen its tie to the rest of the city by providing economic stability, tax revenues, and employment opportunities. The elimination of commercial areas is one other area of concern that Neighborhood redevelopers must grapple with. The redeveloper must incorporate attracting commercial establishments back into the area in order to make the neighbor hood an asset to the city at-large. "Today's corporate strategies maximize the ability of corporations to rapidly invest and disinvest regardless of the impact on workers or communities… The oft-heard scapegoating stereotype of deadbeat poor people masks the growing reality of dead-end jobs and disposable workers…" (Medoff, 191-192) The urban planner who doesn't consider the affect that the elimination of commercial areas will have on the community is redeveloping a neighborhood that is destined to struggle and eventually die. |
