In the history of Urban Planning there have been three main patterns employed in the designation of land use: concentric zones, sectors, and multiple nuclei.

The  Concentric Zones: A land use pattern usually composed of five concentric circles:

  1. Central Business District

  2. Zone of Transition

  3. Zone of Wokingmen's Homes

  4. Zone of Better Homes

  5. Commuter's Zone

Sectors: A land use pattern composed of wedge shaped sectors that are arranged based on residential classes and transportation lines.

  1. Central Business District

  2. Wholesale Light Manufacturing

  3. Low Class Residential

  4. Medium Class Residential

  5. High Class Residential

Multiple Nuclei: A land use pattern usually composed of  several nuclei depending on the land use.

  1. Central Business District

  1. Wholesale Light Manufacturing

  2. Low Class Residential

  3. Medium Class Residential

  4. High Class Residential

  5. Heavy Manufacturing

  6. Outlying Business District

  7. Residential Suburb

  8. Industrial Suburb
