The Automobile:

Bridging The Distance

Throughout history, community size and location was determined primarily by the availability and limitations of transportation.

The mass production of transportation, i.e. the automobile and the public mass transit system made community location and size to some extent based on personal convenience and preference.

Those who had access to transportation moved out of the city, and those who didn't have access were forced to stay, thereby, creating a sharper distinction between the societal class structure.
