The Planning Process

Inventory - NN:

The New Neighborhood area has a community organization called the New Neighborhood Community Betterment Organization (NNCBO).  The NNCBO seeks to build unity and propose and implement improvements within the neighborhood.  The  general comment voiced among the community residents is that "the city and therefore, potential merchants, don't take the community and its residents serious. The city leaders seem to  think that we don't want to live better and have more."

A survey that the NNCBO conducted of the area revealed that:

  • The current housing, though currently substandard would not need to be demolished in order to bring it to code.

  • The proportion of available vacant commercial space to vacant land available for  parking would be more than adequate to accommodate the area.

  • The majority of the land is still privately owned, although none of the owners live in the New Neighborhood area.

  • The residents of the area spend 95% of their income outside of the area.
