To begin our study of Urban Planning, we need to have a common frame of reference.  Our common frame of reference will be the definitions used throughout our study.  Our first set of definitions will give an understanding of what is meant by Urban Planning, Community Renewal, and Neighborhood Redevelopment. Because these terms are used interchangeably, we will divide the terms into their individual words.


Urban: Relating to or located in a city. Inner city areas.


Neighborhood:   1.  A district or area with distinctive characteristics, 

                            2.  The people who live in a particular district, 

                            3.  The surrounding area; vicinity


Community:       1.  a. A group of people living in the same locality and

                                    under  the same government.

                                 b. The locality in which such a group lives.


                            2.  A group of people having common interests.


                            3.  Similarity: a community of interests. 


                            4.  Society as a whole.
